Phone Scams
Have you ever received a phone call from an unknown number claiming to be from the IRS, your bank, or even a family member in trouble? You’re not alone. Phone scams are one of the most common ways fraudsters try to steal money and personal information. Here’s what you need to know.
The Most Common Phone Scams:
The “IRS” Call – You receive a call saying you owe back taxes and must pay immediately to avoid jail time. Fact:The IRS will never call you demanding immediate payment.
The “Grandparent” Scam – Someone pretending to be a grandchild calls, claiming they’re in trouble and need money urgently. Always verify by calling your family member directly.
The Tech Support Scam – You get a call saying your computer has a virus and you need to pay for a fix. Tip:Microsoft, Apple, and other tech companies don’t call customers out of the blue.
How to Handle These Calls:
Don’t Answer Unknown Numbers – Let them go to voicemail. If it’s important, they’ll leave a message.
Hang Up if It Feels Suspicious – Don’t engage with the caller. The longer you stay on the line, the more they try to manipulate you.
Never Give Personal Information – No bank, government agency, or reputable company will ask for your personal details over the phone.
Report the Scam – If you suspect a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your local consumer protection agency.
The best way to fight phone scams is to stay informed and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
